IMPORTANT NOTICE: UPDATE YOUR EDUROAM PROFILE STARTING ON JANUARY 13, 2025.

To all Stuttgart site eduroam users,

The security certificate for eduroam is being updated, and the current certificate will expire on January 13, 2025. Starting that date, you will need to update your eduroam profile to continue accessing the network.

 

What is eduroam?

eduroam is a federated authentication service that enables users from participating institutions to access internet at other eduroam-enabled institutions. The service provides secure internet access through an encrypted WLAN connection using WPA2 Enterprise.
The purpose of eduroam is to provide researchers, teachers, students, and staff with secure and seamless internet access across participating institutions worldwide. 

 

Why is this update required?

NOTE: THESE INSTRUCTIONS WILL ONLY BE VALID STARTING ON JANUARY 13, 2025. FOR FURTHER ASSISTANCE, REACH OUT TO THE IT SUPPORT TEAM.

 

What steps should you take?

  1. Remove the old eduroam configuration profile from your device by either forgetting the network or removing the old configuration profile (Apple devices). You can find the old configuration profile by searching for "Profile" within the settings app. 
  2. Download and install the new eduroam configuration profile on each of your devices by following the instructions below.Install the updated profile on your devices by following the provided instructions.(Hyperlink)

3.      Test your connection to ensure it works with the updated certificate.

  1. Make sure to either memorize your username and UCS password (used for Jira and Confluence) or securely record it. If you do not have your username and UCS password or have forgotten it, please submit a ticket through our Service Desk customer portal or contact us via email at mailto:ithelp@is.mpg.de.

Please complete this update as soon as possible after January 13, 2025, to avoid any connection issues. For further assistance, reach out to the IT support team.


 

Manual for Configuring eduroam for Internet Access

This guide explains how to configure and connect to eduroam on different devices for secure internet access.

 


1. General Prerequisites

·       A valid eduroam username and password IF YOU DO NOT HAVE YOUR USERNAME AND UCS PASSWORD OR HAVE FORGOTTEN IT, PLEASE SUBMIT A TICKET THROUGH OUR SERVICE DESK CUSTOMER PORTAL OR CONTACT US VIA EMAIL AT ITHELP@IS.MPG.DE.

o   Username: Use your username@is.mpg.de

o   Password: Use your UCS password (used for Jira and Confluence) 

·       A device with Wi-Fi capability.


 

2. Device-Specific Configuration

Follow the instructions for the specific device you want to connect to eduroam:


 

2.1 Setting up eduroam with the CAT tool on Windows

 

Eduroam can be installed using configuration wizard (CAT tool). To install with the CAT tool, you must have an Internet connection (LAN, WLAN, cellular) to download the wizard. 

 

1.                  It is strongly recommended to install eduroam using the configuration wizard (CAT tool), which is available for participating institutions at https://cat.eduroam.org .

 


 

 

2.                  In the search box of the pop-up window, type "Intelligente" The option Max-Planck-Institut fuer Intelligente Systeme (Standorte Stuttgart) will appear at the top of the list. Select the institute highlighted in red, as shown in the screenshot.

 

 

3.                   Click on eduroamÒ and download the executable (.exe) file.

 



4.                  After downloading the eduroam configuration assistant from here, just run the .exe file. This will launch the assistant.

 

 

 

5.                  After downloading the eduroam configuration assistant this link, and running the .exe file, the assistant will be launched as shown below.

 

 

 

6.                  You will then see the following notification; press OK to proceed if you are a member of Max-Planck-Institute fuer Intelligente Systeme.

 

 

7.                  Follow the assistant until prompted for your credentials. Enter your credentials as specified in the General Prerequisites.

 

Once the assistant is complete, your computer will automatically connect to the eduroam network if it is available.

2.2 Setting up eduroam with the CAT tool on MacOS:

 

Caution: If the device is connected to eduroam during installation, the new eduroam configuration profile will not be installed correctly under iOS. This means that if an eduroam configuration profile already exists, it must first be removed.

If the old eduroam configuration profile is still present, it must be removed first. Go to Settings → General → VPN & Device Management, select eduroam, and tap Remove Profile.

 

Eduroam can be installed using configuration wizard (CAT tool). To install with the CAT tool, you must have an Internet connection (LAN, WLAN, cellular) to download the wizard. 

 

1.                  In the first step, use Safari to download the configuration file from the website cat.eduroam.org to your macOS.

 


 

2.                  In the search box of the pop-up window, type "Stuttgart." The option Max-Planck-Institute fuer Intelligente Systeme (Standorte Stuttgart) will appear at the top of the list. Select the institute highlighted in red, as shown in the screenshot.

 

 

3.                  Click on eduroam and download the executable configuration profile. 

 

 

4.                  Once the download is complete, the file should automatically open in System Settings → Profiles when executed

 

 

5.                  If it does not, manually open the file by navigating to System Settings → Profiles → User Profiles → eduroam and double-clicking on it.

 



6.                  A new pop-up window will appear ; click "Install" in that window.

 

 

7.                  To install the eduroam configuration profile, click "Continue."

 

 

8.      Enter your username@is.mpg.de and corresponding UCS password (used for Jira and Confluence) then confirm by clicking the “Next” button.

 

 

9.                  In the next window; click "Install" in that window.

 

 

After the installation, eduroam will be displayed in the list of profiles. Now you can select eduroam from the WLAN menu in the menu bar to connect to the network.

2.3 Setting up eduroam on Android v12+

 

1.                  Please install geteduroam by SURF Cooperative from the Google Play Store.

 


 

2.                  Press on the search field and search for Max-Planck-Institut fuer Intelligente Systeme.

 

 

3.                  Enter your username@is.mpg.de and corresponding UCS password (used for Jira and Confluence) then confirm by clicking the “Log in” button.

 

 

4.                  In the next window, press "Allow" to connect to the suggested network via geteduroam.

 

 

5.                  In the next window, click "Save".

 



6.                  Close the window, and you should now be able to connect to eduroam.

2.4 Eduroam With iPad/iOS :

4.                  Click Allow when you see the message: "This website is trying to download a configuration profile. Do you want to allow this?"

 

 

5.                  A message will appear prompting you to check the configuration profile in Settings. Confirm this message by tapping Close.

 


 

6.                  Next , navigate to Settings → General → Profiles. Select eduroam under DOWNLOADED PROFILE and then tap Install.

 


 

7.                  Now, enter your device passcode to proceed with the installation of the eduroam profile.

 


 

8.                  Press Install.

 


 

9.                  Press Install again.

 


 

10.              Enter your username according to your username@is.mpg.de.

 


 

11.              Enter your UCS password (used for Jira and Confluence) then confirm by clicking the “Next” button.

 


 

12.    Finally , tap Done to complete the installation of the eduroam profile.

2.6 Setting up eduroam on a Linux Desktop

 

To ensure a secure eduroam configuration, it is strongly recommended to set up eduroam using the configuration wizard (CAT tool)!

 

1.                  In the first step, use the browser to download the configuration file from the website cat.eduroam.org to your Linux machine.

 


 

2.                  In the search box of the pop-up window, type "intelligente" The option Max-Planck-Institut fuer Intelligente Systeme (Standorte Stuttgart) will appear at the top of the list. Select the institute highlighted in red, as shown in the screenshot.

 

 

3.   Click on eduroam and download the executable file.

 

 




 

 

4.        After downloading the eduroam CAT, you have to make it executable.

 

 

5.        To achieve this, locate the downloaded file on your system and right-click on the file, select Properties.

 

 

6.        Go to the Permissions tab, check the box next to "Allow executing file as program" to enable execution permissions, and then close the window.

 

 

7.             Now , right-click on the executable file and select "Run as a Program".

 


 

8.      A window will appear; please click OK.

 

 

9.      In the next window, click Yes if you are a member of the Max Planck Institute for Intelligent Systems.

 

 

10.  Enter your username@is.mpg.de and your UCS password (used for Jira and Confluence) repeat your password for confirmation, and then click the "OK" button to proceed.

 


 

11.  Finally , tap OK to complete the installation of the eduroam profile.

 


 

3. Troubleshooting Tips

Ø  Double-check credentials: Ensure you’re using the correct username and password format as specified in General prerequisites.

Ø  Contact IT support: If you still face issues, please use our Service Desk customer portal to raise a ticket or you can email us at ithelp@is.mpg.de


4. Security Recommendations

Ø  Use  strong passwords for your UCS password (used for Jira and Confluence).

Ø  Avoid connecting to public or untrusted Wi-Fi networks while using eduroam credentials to set up your new eduroam configuration profile.

Ø  Always validate the certificate if prompted during the setup process.
